Breast Cancer

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast become abnormal and grow out of control.  There are two main types of breast cancer, ductal carcinoma, originating in the ducts and lobular carcinoma originating in the lobules of the breast.

• Breast cancer can be invasive or noninvasive.  Invasive means that the cancer has spread outside of the ducts or lobules.  Noninvasive means it has not spread and is called “in situ”.
• Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a breast cancer lining the milk ducts.  DCIS may progress to invasive cancer if not treated.
• Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), does not necessarily progress to invasive cancer but is considered a marker indicating an increased risk of invasive cancer.
