I knew nothing about the Shaw Regional Cancer Center when my cancer surgeon in Steamboat Springs referred me for radiation therapy. At the time, he gave me three choices. I could travel to Grand Junction or Denver or Edwards. I chose the Shaw in Edwards, in part because it was the closest to home and the most scenic drive!
My first appointment at the Shaw proved that I didn’t need to look any further. I was treated respectfully and personally from the moment I walked in the door of this warm, fresh and well-designed facility. Even though I was anxious about what lay ahead, I felt comfortable.
My treatment regimen was arranged after the preliminary visit, which included tests and preparations. The procedure and six-week schedule were explained professionally and informatively, leaving no questions unanswered. Then came the moment that was to be the precursor of how I would come to appreciate the Shaw and all the little extra attentions that they gave me.
“I see you’re from Steamboat. Will you be traveling daily or can we help you be more comfortable by assisting with housing? We have a counselor on staff and group sessions if that would help. We’ll help you find the grocery store, coffee shop, restaurants and whatever else you need. Just let us know.”
I packed for my six-week excursion and arrived at the Shaw to open arms. From the doctors to the front desk, they safeguarded my dignity as if it were their own. I felt like family, although I can’t imagine how the staff continually works with the ups and downs of cancer each day. Leaving at the end was a relief, but also bittersweet because I had found new friends.
I can say this. I believe in the technology of Western medicine and good old-fashioned bedside manner. I received more of both than I could ask for at the at the Shaw.
