Medical oncology, also known as chemotherapy, is a treatment option that has been used since the 1950’s to treat cancer. Chemotherapy involves a drug therapy regimen to treat your cancer. Medical oncology can be used in the pursuit to cure cancer, to prevent the cancer from spreading, or to ease symptoms associated with cancer. This treatment option is commonly used in combination with other procedures and cancer treatment options.
Radiation Oncology (Radiation Therapy)
Radiation therapy, or radiotherapy, is a widely used treatment option for many types of cancer. Through the use of high powered x-rays or radioactive seeds, radiation therapy works by damaging cancerous cells. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells are not able to repair themselves. Radiation therapy can be used alone or as part of a treatment plan to cure cancer, shrink cancerous tumors, provide relief from symptoms, or to treat cancers which are inoperable.
Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy which uses radioactive seeds to treat different types of cancer. These radioactive seeds are carefully placed in the cancerous tissues in order to attack the cancer cells. Brachytherapy is commonly used to treat breast cancer, gynecologic cancers, and prostate cancer.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Intensity modulated radiation therapy, often referred to as IMRT or IMRT radiation therapy, is a form of radiation therapy that is much more precise that other radiation therapy treatments. Through the use of 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scans, IMRT is able to calculate the best dose of radiation to use and administer the radiation therapy to the cancerous tissue with minimal exposure to the normal tissues or organs surrounding the cancer. IMRT is currently being used to treat prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, breast cancer, gynecologic cancers, liver cancer, brain cancer, lymphomas, and sarcomas. The Shaw Regional Cancer Center is currently the only provider of IMRT in the central Rocky Mountain region.

The Sonnenalp Breast Imaging Center is located at The Shaw Cancer Center in Colorado. The Breast Imaging Center is dedicated to providing the most advanced technology in breast imaging and diagnosis. Our caring medical professionals specialize in breast cancer radiation therapy. Physical Therapy
Cutting edge cancer research has indicated that being physically active throughout your cancer treatment is highly beneficial for the patient. THe Shaw Regional Cancer Center has teamed up with Howard Head Sports Medicine to provide an integrative cancer treatment plan for each patient. Physical therapy can significantly improve the quality of life for cancer patients throughout treatment and recovery.
Clinical Trials
The Shaw Regional Cancer Center conducts clinical trials for cancer treatments in conjunction with the University of Colorado. As part of your individual treatment plan you may have the opportunity to participate in one of our current clinical trials.
