Recent research in cancer treatments has demonstrated that patients who remain physically active while they are undergoing treatment have fewer negative side effects during radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Vail Valley Medical Center's prestigious Howard Head Sports Medicine has teamed up with the physicians at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center to provide an integrative approach to treating patients during both treatment and recovery.
At our advanced oncology facility, physical therapy goals are established in relation to each individual’s diagnosis and treatment plan. These therapy goals typically include:
• Improving range of motion after surgery
• Generalized strengthening
• Core strengthening
• Lymphedema education
• Improving cardiovascular function
• Decreasing pain
Our professional oncology physical therapist, Christine Hasselback, DPT, CLT, is a certified lymphedema therapist who provides complete decongestive therapy, including massage, bandaging, and exercises for patients with either upper or lower extremity lymphedema.

The Shaw Cancer Center also offers "Fit for Survival"; a personal exercise program for patients and cancer survivors. The benefits of exercise include increased energy and weight loss. Weight loss has been shown to reduce the recurrence of some cancers. Under the guidance of Dustin Buttars, EP,CES, a customized, comprehensive exercise plan is created for each patient.
