Patients traveling to Shaw for cancer treatment are invited to stay with their family and/or caregiver at Jack's Place, a cancer caring house. Named after Dr. Jack Eck, a longtime and beloved Vail-area doctor, Jack's Place offers a haven of tranquility and well-being for patients who need day and night lodging during cancer treatment.
 
With a pay-what-you-can philosophy, guests are invited to take respite at Jack's for the day or overnight.

COVID-19 Precautions

The following precautions are in place to help safeguard the health of our patients and guests:
• All guests must have had the COVID-19 vaccination.
• Activities and classes at Jack’s place require RSVP due to limited capacity.

What To Expect

Facility

Jack’s Place is a 10,825-square-foot lodge, located immediately adjacent to Shaw Cancer Center. 
 
Jack's Place offers all of the comforts of home with 12 private and beautifully decorated guest rooms. Each guest room is equipped for two guests – a patient and a caregiver. Patients are responsible for general housekeeping, laundry and meals. Jack’s Place does not provide medical care or treatment.

Guest Eligibility

To stay at Jack’s Place, guests must meet the following requirements:
  • Must have a cancer diagnosis and be in treatment at Shaw Cancer Center and/or Vail Health.
  • Must have a referral by the medical staff of the Shaw Cancer Center.
  • Must sign a temporary housing agreement and adhere to Jack’s Place policies.
  • Must have the COVID-19 vaccination.
 
Caregivers must meet the following eligibility guidelines:
  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Be ambulatory.
  • Be able to take care of the patient, able to maintain room and prepare meals, etc.
  • Be free of communicable diseases.
  • Must have the COVID-19 vaccination.

  • Please contact us as soon as possible before your first date of treatment, as reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  

What To Bring

To ensure your stay is a pleasant one, guest should bring the following items:
Clothing
Extra pillow
Food and drink (you will have your own kitchen storage cabinet)
Toiletries / personal hygiene items
Each room has a Blu-ray player, so bring your favorite music and/or movies
Hair dryer
Personal mementos such as pictures or other items to make your room feel like home
Medications
Telephone calling card for long distance calls
Laundry detergent (HE – high efficiency)
Clothes hangers

Complimentary Items

Several items are complimentary at Jack's Place, including:
Linens and towels
TV in room with remote

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a set time period on how long I can stay at Jack’s Place?

As long as you are receiving active treatment, you are welcome to stay with us.  Please note that we are closed from Friday afternoon until Monday morning.  If you are a longer-term guest, you are welcome to leave your belongings in your room over the weekend.

Does Jack’s Place have wireless capabilities?

Yes, we have free wireless access available.

Are meals served?

No, guests are responsible for their own food and food preparation. Shaw Café serves breakfast and lunch for a reasonable price.

Is there a charge to stay at Jack’s Place?

We operate on a pay-what-you-can philosophy. A donation of $25 per night is encouraged and appreciated to help defray our operational costs.
 

Are there laundry facilities?

Unfortunately there is no laundry facility at Jack’s Place at this time.

Are there social activities at Jack’s Place?

Yes, Jack’s Place has various social activities during the week. There are yoga classes, Pet Partner visits, nutrition classes, holiday events and more.

Are children allowed?

Children 16 years and over are allowed. If you need to bring a child younger than 16 years old, please call us regarding alternative arrangements.

Is there a telephone in the guest room with voicemail?

There is a telephone in each room that makes local calls. There is no voicemail. If you need to make long distance calls, please bring a calling card.

Do I have to have a caregiver?

It is not required to have a caregiver. However, your doctor has to agree that you are able to care for yourself, and you must agree that if your ability to care for yourself becomes difficult, you will secure a caregiver or end your stay at Jack’s Place in order to keep yourself safe.
